Lives of the Saints
Published in Paperback by Tan Books & Publishers, Inc. (September, 1995)
Author: Alban Butler
Average review score:

Review from the Publisher
Father Butler's famous Lives of the Saints ranks only after the Bible, the Missal and The Imitation of Christ as the all-time most popular and authoritative Catholic book. This handy one-volume edition is taken from the many volumes of the highly revered Father Alban Butler (1710-1763), an English Catholic priest and scholar, who devoted almost 30 years of meticulous research to the lives of the Saints and whose work was originally published in the 1750's. This present edition contains no debunking, as do many other editions; thus, it conveys Fr. Butler's spirit of profound faith in and reverence for our saintly traditions. Additional Saints have been added, however, who have lived since the author's time-including St. Theresa the Little Flower, Pope St. Pius X, St. Catherine Labouré, etc. Based on the traditional Catholic calendar as of 1955. Gives approximately one page per saint, one or two saints per day, plus a brief Reflection based on the virtues of the saint. Extremely valuable to read daily in order to put oneself in tune with our holy Catholic traditions and to develop a truly Catholic approach to life. Shows the fruits of the Catholic Faith as borne out in the lives of its greatest adherents. Excellent for the whole family!! 428pp. PB. Imprimatur.

Lombard Communes
Published in Library Binding by Haskell House Pub Ltd (September, 1969)
Author: William F. Butler
Average review score:

Fascinating study on a little-known subject
First published in 1906, this book is a history of Northern Italy from the rise of the Communes in the major cities (XI Century) to the establishment of "tyrannies" by powerful families at the beginning of the XIV Century (first the cruel Ezzelino da Romano, then the Visconti in Milan, the Carrara in Padua, the Scaliger in Verona etc...). The author analyzes the balance of power and the struggles between Guelfes and Ghibellines in cities like Milan, Pavia, Cremona, Brescia, Verona, Padua, Mantua... There are very few studies in English about the wars between Guelfes and Ghibellines, which tore Italy between 1200 and 1350, so if you're interested in the subject it's necessary reading.

On the other hand, the illustrations are poor : the maps look like photocopies of hand drawings and the photographs are very dark. That's 1906 technology I guess.

Lords of Light: The Path of Initiation in the Western Mysteries: The Teachings of the Ibis Fraternity
Published in Paperback by Inner Traditions Intl Ltd (January, 1991)
Authors: Walter Ernest Butler, Toni Geikie, and M. A. Geikie
Average review score:

One of the best books on spiritual pathwork I have read!
I have been readiing all kinds of books on spiritual topics, meditation, chakras, kundalini, tarot, magic, etc, for the last 2-3 years.

This is by far the BEST I have ever read on the topic of what it means to be "spiritual" and trying to find your "path" and what will be expected of you if you intended to follow that path.

The book is taken from a series of lectures W.E. Butler gave to students of the Ibis Fraternity shortly before his death in 1978. I have all of the W.E. Butler books, including the hard to find "Apprenticed to Magic & Magic and the Qabalah", but in my opinion this is his best written work.

This should be the first book someone reads who is serious about learning more about the human soul, inner planes, and spiritual forces of the universe. It will give you a lot to think about, and answer many questions for you (as it did for me even after about 3 years of heavy reading in this area).

You can learn more about W.E. Butler, his books, and the pathwork the initiates of his philosopy have undertaken by visiting the website for "Servants of The Light" at servantsofthelight.org

Loving Home: Caring for African American Marriage and Families
Published in Paperback by Pilgrim Pr (October, 2000)
Author: Lee H. Butler
Average review score:

A Loving Home
Professor Butler's well written book is not just for African-Americans, it would be useful for all couples - married or not. The book emphasizes the need for communication and openness, trust and care. The book has wonderful pastoral or spiritual overtones. Each chapter ends with a section entitled "Considerations for Caring -questions and observations that apply to all in relationship. I highly recommend the book to those in the pastoral care area, to other professional counselors and to all who are in or entering relationship. In fact I plan to give it as a gift to friends who are in these fields and to all my friends who are contemplating marriage.

Mexico Megacity
Published in Paperback by Westview Press (June, 2000)
Authors: James B. Pick and Edgar W. Butler
Average review score:

"A concise look into the biggest city of the world"
With its enormous population and growing importance as an international center, Mexico City is an important laboratory for urban studies of many kinds. This book describes and analyzes the city's growth, change, and social characteristics, including migration patterns, housing, transportation, crime, the labor force, economic levels, marriage and fertility patterns, health and morality, ethnic and social groups and the environment. The book concludes with acapstone chapter that summarizes the researchers' findings, reflects on some of the previous literature about the city, and suggests government policies that may benefit the city's future.

Despite all the interesting information that is provided in this book, why would I want to pay .... for this book? For any student of urban sociology, public policy, urban anthropology etc. as well as for any urban missionary or urban pastor this book is a treasure house of information about a major world class city and a model of the kind of research that needs to be done on cities anywhere. People like me, who love their city and want to understand it better, "Mexico MegaCity" offers great insights into how a city works. It is crucial that information like this be used and then applied to ministry strategies or public policy proposals or economic development plans etc...

Mobilisation of the Nervous System
Published in Hardcover by Churchill Livingstone (15 January, 1991)
Authors: David S. Butler and Mark A. Jones
Average review score:

An excellent text for the novice and experienced clinician
The text "Mobilisation of the Nervous System" is an excellent text for both the novice and experienced Physical Therapist. I bought this book to review for the Orthopedic Clinical Specialist exam, and have found it very helpful. The text does an excellent job of describing general anatomical and physiological reasoning behind commonly used evaluation and treatment techniques, as well as describing these techniques in detail. The illustrations and descriptions are good, so that if you are not practiced at these techniques you will be able to clearly see the proper postioning that is required. I would recommend this text for anyone who wants to update their clincal skills or for new Physical Therapists that want to learn more about this aspect of Physical Therapy.
